Every human being faces an enemy who never sleeps, never tires and never gives up.
Allah warns us in the Quran: “Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy. He only invites his party to be among the companions of the Blaze” (Fatir 35:6).
Shaytan whispers doubts, makes sins look attractive, stirs anger, spreads division and tries to pull the believer away from Allah.
But Allah has not left us defenceless. The Quran and Sunnah give us a complete system of protection: words to say, actions to take, habits to build and a mindset to adopt.
This article explains who Shaytan is, how he works and the practical means of protection that every Muslim can use every day.
Who Is Shaytan?
The word “shaytan” refers to any rebellious, evil being among jinn or humans. The chief of the devils is Iblis, a jinn who used to worship Allah among the angels.
When Allah created Adam and commanded those present to prostrate to him, Iblis refused out of arrogance, saying: “I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay” (Al-A’raf 7:12).
He was expelled from Allah’s mercy and asked for respite until the Day of Resurrection, vowing to mislead the children of Adam.
Iblis said: “Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path. Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful” (Al-A’raf 7:16-17).
Shaytan’s limits
Despite this threat, Shaytan has no real power over the believers who rely on Allah.
Allah says: “Indeed, there is for him no authority over those who have believed and rely upon their Lord. His authority is only over those who take him as an ally” (An-Nahl 16:99-100).
On the Day of Judgement, Shaytan himself will admit: “I had no authority over you except that I invited you and you responded to me” (Ibrahim 14:22).
His main weapon is waswasah, whispering. He suggests, tempts and decorates, but he cannot force anyone to sin.
How Shaytan Works
Step by step
Allah warns: “Do not follow the footsteps of Satan” (An-Nur 24:21). Shaytan rarely invites a believer to a major sin directly.
He starts with small steps: delaying a prayer, a glance, a small lie, until the person slides further.
Making evil look beautiful
“Satan made their deeds pleasing to them” (An-Nahl 16:63). He presents sins as fun, harmless or even necessary.
Promising poverty
“Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality” (Al-Baqarah 2:268). He discourages charity by making people fear loss.
Sowing division
“Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred” (Al-Ma’idah 5:91). He stirs arguments between spouses, siblings and friends.
Stirring anger
The Prophet ﷺ described anger as a coal from Shaytan in the heart of the son of Adam.
Distracting in prayer
Shaytan tries to distract worshippers, making them forget how many rak’ahs they prayed or filling their minds with worldly thoughts.
Spreading doubts
He whispers doubts about faith, purity and worship. The Prophet ﷺ said that if someone finds such thoughts, they should seek refuge in Allah and stop dwelling on them.
Encouraging despair
After a person sins, Shaytan tries to convince them that Allah will never forgive them, so they give up on repentance.
The Daily Shield: Words of Protection
Seeking refuge
“And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah” (Al-A’raf 7:200).
Say: “A’udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim” (I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed).
Ayat al-Kursi
The Prophet ﷺ confirmed that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255) before sleeping will have a guardian from Allah, and no devil will come near him until morning.
The last three surahs
Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas are known as protection surahs.
The Prophet ﷺ would recite them into his hands, blow into them and wipe over his body before sleeping, three times.
Surah An-Nas specifically seeks refuge “from the evil of the retreating whisperer, who whispers into the breasts of mankind”.
The last two verses of Al-Baqarah
Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.
Surah Al-Baqarah in the home
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not make your houses into graves. Indeed, Shaytan flees from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.”
Bismillah
Saying “Bismillah” before eating, entering the home, closing doors and undressing protects from Shaytan.
The Prophet ﷺ said that if a man mentions Allah when entering his home and when eating, Shaytan says to his companions: “There is no place for you to stay and no dinner.”
The dua for leaving the home
“Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.” Whoever says this is told: “You are guided, sufficed and protected”, and Shaytan moves away from him.
The dua for entering the toilet
“Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba’ith” (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from male and female devils).
La ilaha illallah one hundred times
Whoever says “La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir” one hundred times in a day will have protection from Shaytan for that day until evening.
Morning and evening adhkar
The daily remembrances of morning and evening act as a fortress around the believer.
Actions That Protect
Guarding the five daily prayers
Prayer is the strongest connection to Allah and the greatest barrier against evil. “Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing” (Al-Ankabut 29:45).
Staying with the community
The Prophet ﷺ said that the wolf eats the stray sheep, and that Shaytan is with the one who is alone and further from two. Good company protects the heart.
Keeping wudu
Staying in a state of purity is a source of light and protection. When angry, making wudu cools the fire of anger.
Controlling anger
When angry, say “A’udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim”, sit down if standing, lie down if sitting and stay silent.
Lowering the gaze
The glance is described as one of Shaytan’s arrows. Lowering the gaze protects the heart from many temptations.
Avoiding idle talk and music that distracts
Shaytan uses distraction to fill the heart with things that crowd out remembrance.
Yawning etiquette
The Prophet ﷺ said that yawning is from Shaytan, so one should try to suppress it and cover the mouth.
Closing doors and covering vessels at night
The Prophet ﷺ advised closing doors, covering containers and keeping children indoors at dusk while mentioning Allah’s name.
Not delaying repentance
Repentance destroys Shaytan’s efforts.
Iblis is reported to have said: “I will keep misleading them as long as their souls are in their bodies,” and Allah replied: “I will keep forgiving them as long as they seek My forgiveness.”
Protecting the Heart From Whispers
Do not dwell on them
When doubtful thoughts come, the Prophet ﷺ advised seeking refuge in Allah and stopping. Arguing with the whispers only feeds them.
Remember that whispers are a sign of faith
When companions complained of terrible thoughts, the Prophet ﷺ said: “That is clear faith”, because their discomfort showed their faith was alive.
Learn your religion
Knowledge protects from doubts. A person who understands the basics of their faith is less vulnerable to confusion.
Seek help for persistent waswasah
Some people struggle with intense, repetitive doubts about purity or prayer. It is important to follow simple rules, ignore the doubts and seek guidance from knowledgeable people.
Protecting Children
The Prophet ﷺ would seek protection for his grandsons Hasan and Husayn, saying: “U’idhukuma bi kalimatillahit-tammah, min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli ‘aynin lammah” (I seek protection for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature and from every evil eye).
Parents can recite this over their children and teach them to say Bismillah, recite the last three surahs before sleep and seek refuge in Allah.
Protection During Ramadan
The Prophet ﷺ said that when Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained.
This makes Ramadan a golden opportunity to break bad habits and build good ones, since the remaining sins often come from the nafs and habits, not direct whispering.
A Simple Daily Protection Routine
Protection works best when it becomes routine rather than something remembered only in moments of fear.
In the morning after Fajr, recite the morning adhkar, Ayat al-Kursi and the three protection surahs three times each.
When leaving the house, say the dua for leaving and step out with your right foot.
During the day, say Bismillah before eating, keep your tongue busy with dhikr and seek refuge in Allah whenever anger or temptation rises.
After Asr or Maghrib, recite the evening adhkar.
Before sleeping, make wudu, recite Ayat al-Kursi, the last two verses of Al-Baqarah and blow the three protection surahs into your hands and wipe over your body.
This routine takes only a few minutes yet surrounds the whole day with a shield.
Protecting the Home
The home should be a place where Shaytan finds no comfort. Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in it regularly, even across several days.
Pray some of your voluntary prayers at home, as the Prophet ﷺ advised. Greet your family with salaam when entering and mention Allah’s name.
Avoid shouting and arguments, which invite Shaytan’s involvement.
Keep the home free of things that keep the angels of mercy away, and fill it with the sound of the Quran and remembrance.
A home built on these habits becomes peaceful, and its members support one another in staying close to Allah.
Protecting the Mind in the Digital Age
Today many of Shaytan’s whispers arrive through screens. Endless scrolling, inappropriate content and online arguments can harden the heart and waste precious time.
Protect yourself by setting limits on screen time, unfollowing accounts that encourage sin, using content filters and replacing idle browsing with beneficial recitations and lectures.
Before opening social media, ask yourself whether it will bring you closer to Allah or further away.
These small decisions are part of the same struggle against the footsteps of Shaytan that the Quran warns about.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best protection from Shaytan?
Sincere reliance on Allah, guarding the prayers, and regular recitation of Ayat al-Kursi, the last three surahs and the morning and evening adhkar.
Can Shaytan force me to sin?
No. Shaytan can only whisper and invite. He has no authority over those who believe and rely on Allah.
Is Iblis an angel?
No. The Quran says Iblis was of the jinn.
Which surah drives Shaytan out of the house?
Surah Al-Baqarah. The Prophet ﷺ said Shaytan flees from a house in which it is recited.
What should I say when I feel angry?
Say “A’udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim”, change your position and make wudu.
Recovering After a Slip
Every believer slips at times, and Shaytan’s goal after a sin is to make the person despair.
The Quran describes the righteous as those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins (Aal Imran 3:135).
After a slip, do not wallow in guilt.
Make wudu, pray two rak’ahs of repentance, sincerely ask Allah for forgiveness, follow the bad deed with a good deed and resolve not to return to it.
Each sincere repentance is a defeat for Shaytan and a victory for the believer.
The Role of Good Company
The people we spend time with shape our hearts.
The Prophet ﷺ compared a good companion to a perfume seller: either he gives you some perfume, you buy some, or at least you enjoy a pleasant smell.
A bad companion is like a blacksmith’s bellows that may burn your clothes or leave you with a bad smell.
Surround yourself with friends who remind you of Allah, encourage prayer and steer you away from sin. Such companions are one of the strongest protections from Shaytan.
Final Thoughts
Shaytan is a real and determined enemy, but he is weak before the believer who holds firmly to Allah. “Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak” (An-Nisa 4:76).
Build your daily fortress with prayer, the Quran, adhkar and good company. Seek refuge in Allah at every whisper, repent quickly after every slip and never despair of His mercy.
With these simple, consistent practices, a believer walks through life protected, guided and at peace.
