Patience, known in Arabic as sabr, is one of the most frequently mentioned qualities in the Quran.
Allah mentions it in many places, praises those who have it, promises them reward without measure and declares that He is with them.
Whenever life becomes difficult, the verses about patience are among the most comforting words a believer can turn to.
Sabr in Islam does not mean passive acceptance or simply waiting for problems to end.
It means holding firm: keeping the heart steady with trust in Allah, keeping the tongue from complaint against Allah’s decree and keeping the limbs from wrong actions, while continuing to do what is right.
This article gathers some of the most powerful Quran verses about patience, explains their meanings, describes the three types of patience, shares the stories of patient prophets and offers practical steps for building patience in daily life.
What Is Sabr?
The linguistic meaning
The Arabic root of sabr carries the meaning of restraining or holding back. A patient person restrains themselves from panic, despair and wrongdoing.
The Islamic meaning
Scholars describe sabr as restraining the soul from anxiety and anger, the tongue from complaint against Allah and the limbs from harmful actions during hardship.
Patience is active
Sabr includes perseverance in doing good, steadfastness in worship and determination in pursuing what is right. It is a strength, not a weakness.
The Three Types of Patience
Scholars commonly describe three types of sabr.
| Type | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Patience in obedience | Persisting in worship and good deeds | Praying Fajr on cold mornings, fasting in long days |
| Patience in avoiding sin | Holding back from what Allah has forbidden | Lowering the gaze, avoiding backbiting |
| Patience in hardship | Accepting Allah’s decree in trials | Illness, loss, poverty, grief |
All three are essential. Many people think of patience only during trials, but patience in obedience and in avoiding sin is just as important.
Quran Verses About Patience
1. Allah is with the patient
“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” (Al-Baqarah 2:153)
This verse links patience with prayer as the two great sources of help. The promise that Allah is with the patient means His support, help and care accompany them.
2. Trials are certain, and good news is for the patient
“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say: Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the rightly guided.” (Al-Baqarah 2:155–157)
These verses teach three truths: tests are certain, the right response is to remember that we belong to Allah, and the reward is blessings, mercy and guidance.
3. Reward without measure
“Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.” (Az-Zumar 39:10)
Most deeds are rewarded by a known multiple. Patience is rewarded without limit.
4. Allah loves the patient
“And Allah loves the patient.” (Al ʿImran 3:146)
This verse comes after a description of believers who did not weaken or give up despite hardship in Allah’s cause.
5. Be patient, endure and remain steadfast
“O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.” (Al ʿImran 3:200)
This verse calls for several levels of patience: personal patience, outlasting others in patience and remaining steadfast.
6. Patience is a quality of the successful
“By time, indeed mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.” (Al-ʿAsr 103:1–3)
Patience is one of the four qualities that save a person from loss.
7. Beautiful patience
“So be patient with beautiful patience.” (Al-Maʿarij 70:5)
“Beautiful patience” (sabrun jamil) is patience without complaint to people. Prophet Yaʿqub used this phrase when he lost his son Yusuf.
8. Allah’s promise is true
“So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth.” (Ar-Rum 30:60)
When patience feels difficult, this verse reminds us that Allah’s promise will be fulfilled.
9. Patience for the sake of your Lord
“And for your Lord be patient.” (Al-Muddaththir 74:7)
Patience is most meaningful when its intention is to please Allah.
10. Patience and forgiveness
“And whoever is patient and forgives, indeed, that is of the matters requiring determination.” (Ash-Shura 42:43)
Patience is linked with forgiving those who wrong us, a sign of great strength.
11. With hardship comes ease
“For indeed, with hardship will be ease. Indeed, with hardship will be ease.” (Ash-Sharh 94:5–6)
Although this verse does not use the word sabr, it is one of the greatest sources of patience. The repetition emphasises that ease accompanies every hardship.
12. Patience leads to leadership
“And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and were certain of Our signs.” (As-Sajdah 32:24)
Patience combined with certainty produces leaders who guide others.

Stories of Patience From the Prophets
Prophet Ayyub
Ayyub was tested with severe illness and the loss of his wealth and children for many years. He never complained against Allah.
He prayed: “Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.”
Allah restored his health and family, and said: “Indeed, We found him patient, an excellent servant.”
Prophet Yaʿqub
Yaʿqub lost his beloved son Yusuf, and later another son.
Through years of grief, he said: “So patience is most fitting,” and “I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah.”
His grief was real, but he took it to Allah, not to people. Eventually, he was reunited with both sons.
Prophet Yusuf
Yusuf was thrown into a well by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused and imprisoned for years.
He remained patient and righteous throughout, and Allah raised him to a position of authority in Egypt.
When he met his brothers, he said: “Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.”
Prophet Musa
Musa endured Pharaoh’s tyranny, the stubbornness of his own people and years in the desert. His patience and trust were rewarded with victory and guidance.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ faced rejection, mockery, boycott, the loss of his wife Khadijah and his uncle Abu Talib, injuries at Taʾif and Uhud and the loss of his children.
Through all of this, he remained patient and continued his mission. Allah told him repeatedly in the Quran to be patient as the earlier messengers had been.
Patience in the Sunnah
Patience at the first strike
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Patience is at the first stroke of calamity.” True patience is shown in the initial moment of shock, not only after time has passed.
Everything is good for the believer
The Prophet ﷺ said that the affair of the believer is amazing: if good befalls him he is grateful, and that is good for him; if harm befalls him he is patient, and that is good for him.
Sins are expiated
The Prophet ﷺ taught that no fatigue, illness, worry, grief or harm afflicts a Muslim, even a thorn prick, except that Allah expiates some of their sins through it.
Practical Steps to Build Patience
1. Remember that everything is from Allah
Saying “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiʿun” in hardship reminds us that we and everything we have belong to Allah.
2. Turn to prayer
Allah tells us to seek help through patience and prayer. When stressed, pray two rakat and pour your heart out in sujud.
3. Recite and reflect on the Quran
Reading the verses of patience in times of difficulty brings comfort and perspective.
4. Make dua
Ask Allah for patience. The Quran includes the dua: “Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet.”
5. Remember the reward
Remind yourself that patience is rewarded without measure.
6. Reflect on the stories of the prophets
Their trials were far greater, yet they remained patient.
7. Look at those with less
The Prophet ﷺ advised looking at those below us in worldly matters to appreciate our blessings.
8. Avoid complaining to people
Sharing feelings with a trusted person for support is fine; constant complaint about Allah’s decree is not.
9. Take practical steps
Patience does not mean doing nothing. Seek treatment, solutions and support while trusting Allah.
10. Seek help when needed
If sadness or anxiety becomes overwhelming, it is wise to speak to a doctor or counsellor. Seeking help is part of taking the means.

Memorising Verses of Patience
Memorising a few of these verses means they are always with you when you need them. Consider learning:
- Al-Baqarah 2:153

- Az-Zumar 39:10

Recite them in your prayers and repeat them in difficult moments.
Patience and Gratitude Together
Scholars often describe faith as having two halves: patience and gratitude. In times of ease, the believer is grateful; in times of difficulty, the believer is patient.
Both responses come from the same root, which is knowing that everything comes from Allah and that He is Wise and Merciful in all that He decrees.
Several verses of the Quran end with the phrase “for everyone patient and grateful”, describing the people who truly benefit from Allah’s signs.
When we practise both, we stop judging our lives only by whether things are easy or hard, and instead ask how we can please Allah in each situation.
This shift in perspective is one of the greatest gifts the verses of patience can give.
