Know Allah in Prosperity and He Will Know You in Adversity

Some pieces of advice are so complete that a lifetime can be spent living them. One of these is the famous advice the Prophet ﷺ gave to his young cousin, Abdullah ibn Abbas.

In one version of this narration, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Know Allah in prosperity and He will know you in adversity.”

These few words carry a profound lesson about our relationship with Allah: the bond we build in easy times becomes our support in difficult times.

This article explains the meaning of this hadith, its full context in the advice to Ibn Abbas, what it means to “know Allah” in times of ease, how Allah “knows” His servant in hardship, examples from the Quran and the lives of the prophets, and practical ways to live this advice today.

The Full Advice to Ibn Abbas

Abdullah ibn Abbas was still a boy when he rode behind the Prophet ﷺ one day.

The Prophet ﷺ said to him: “O young man, I will teach you some words. Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah. When you seek help, seek help from Allah. Know that if the whole nation gathered to benefit you with something, they would not benefit you except with what Allah has already written for you. And if they gathered to harm you with something, they would not harm you except with what Allah has already written against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.”

In another, longer narration, the Prophet ﷺ added: “Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him in front of you. Know Allah in prosperity and He will know you in adversity. Know that what has passed you by was never going to befall you, and what has befallen you was never going to pass you by. Know that victory comes with patience, relief comes with affliction and with hardship comes ease.”

Scholars have described this hadith as one of the great foundations of Islam, because it teaches tawheed, reliance on Allah, belief in divine decree and patience, all in a few short sentences.

What Does “Know Allah in Prosperity” Mean?

“Prosperity” here refers to times of ease: health, wealth, safety, free time, youth and comfort. “Knowing Allah” in these times does not simply mean knowing that Allah exists. It means:

  • Remembering Him when life is easy.
  • Obeying His commands and avoiding what He forbids.
  • Thanking Him for His blessings and using them in His obedience.
  • Turning to Him in dua even when you do not feel in need.
  • Building a relationship with Him through prayer, Quran and good deeds.

Many people only turn to Allah when something goes wrong. When they are healthy, wealthy and comfortable, they forget Him.

Then, when hardship arrives, they suddenly start praying and asking.

The hadith encourages the opposite: build your relationship with Allah in good times, so that it is strong and ready when difficult times come.

What Does “He Will Know You in Adversity” Mean?

Allah knows everything, at all times. So what does it mean that He will “know” you in adversity?

Scholars explain that this refers to a special kind of knowledge that includes care, help, rescue and kindness.

Just as we might say that a friend “knows” us, meaning they stand by us, Allah’s “knowing” His servant in hardship means He will support, protect and relieve them because of the relationship they built in times of ease.

This is a promise. The servant who remembers Allah when life is good will find Allah near, responsive and merciful when life becomes hard.

Examples From the Quran

Prophet Yunus

The clearest example of this hadith in the Quran is the story of Prophet Yunus.

When he was swallowed by the whale, he called out from the darkness: “There is no god but You, glory be to You, indeed I have been among the wrongdoers.”

Allah says: “And had he not been of those who exalt Allah, he would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected” (As-Saffat 37:143-144).

Scholars explain that “of those who exalt Allah” refers to the worship and remembrance Yunus had done before his trial.

Because he knew Allah in times of ease, Allah knew him in the belly of the whale and rescued him.

Pharaoh

In contrast, Pharaoh ignored Allah throughout his life of power and luxury.

Only when he was drowning did he say: “I believe that there is no deity except that in whom the Children of Israel believe.” But it was too late.

Allah said: “Now? And you had disobeyed before and were of the corrupters?” (Yunus 10:90-91).

Pharaoh did not know Allah in prosperity, so his belief in adversity was not accepted.

The people of the ship

The Quran describes people at sea who call upon Allah sincerely when a storm hits, but when He brings them safely to land, they return to associating partners with Him (Al-‘Ankabut 29:65).

This pattern of remembering Allah only in danger is exactly what the hadith warns against.

Prophet Yusuf

Yusuf remained devoted to Allah throughout his life, as a young man resisting temptation, in prison and in power. Allah supported him at every stage, from the well to the throne.

His story shows that a person who is mindful of Allah in all conditions will find Allah’s help in every trial.

The Story of the Three Men in the Cave

The Prophet ﷺ told the story of three men who took shelter in a cave when a huge rock rolled down and sealed its entrance.

They realised that only Allah could save them, so each of them called upon Allah by mentioning a righteous deed he had done sincerely in the past.

The first mentioned how he used to serve his elderly parents, giving them milk before his own children.

The second mentioned how he left a sin out of fear of Allah when he had the chance to commit it.

The third mentioned how he had kept and grown the wages of a worker who left without collecting them, and gave all of it back to him when he returned.

After each dua, the rock moved a little, until they were able to leave. This story is a powerful illustration of “know Allah in prosperity and He will know you in adversity”.

Their good deeds in times of ease became the means of their rescue in a time of need.

Why This Hadith Matters Today

Life is unpredictable

Health can change overnight. Jobs can be lost.

Loved ones can pass away. None of us knows what tomorrow holds.

Building a strong relationship with Allah now is the best preparation for whatever is coming.

Ease can be a test

Times of comfort are often more dangerous than times of hardship, because they make people heedless.

The hadith reminds us that ease is a test of gratitude and remembrance, not a time to forget Allah.

Our deeds become our support

Every prayer, every verse recited, every act of charity and every sin avoided in times of ease becomes a store of good that we can call upon in difficult times.

It brings peace of mind

A person who knows Allah in good times does not panic in bad times. They know that the One they have been worshipping is with them, and that He will not abandon them.

Practical Ways to Know Allah in Times of Ease

Guard your prayers

The five daily prayers are the foundation of your relationship with Allah. Pray them on time, with focus, even when you are busy or feeling good.

Keep a daily connection with the Quran

Read, recite or listen to a portion of the Quran every day. Even a few verses keep your heart connected.

Make dua when you are not in need

Ask Allah for good things in this world and the next, thank Him and seek His forgiveness, even when nothing is wrong. This builds the habit of turning to Him.

Be grateful

Say “Alhamdulillah” often, and use your blessings in ways that please Allah.

Gratitude keeps blessings and increases them, as Allah says: “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you” (Ibrahim 14:7).

Give charity in times of plenty

When you have wealth, give generously. Charity extinguishes sins and protects from calamities.

Do hidden good deeds

Like the three men in the cave, have some good deeds that only Allah knows about. These sincere deeds are especially valuable.

Keep good company

Spend time with people who remind you of Allah and encourage you to do good.

Use your youth and health

The Prophet ﷺ advised taking advantage of five before five: youth before old age, health before sickness, wealth before poverty, free time before busyness and life before death.

How to Respond When Adversity Comes

Remember that it was written

The hadith reminds us that what has befallen us was never going to miss us. This belief brings acceptance and calm.

Be patient

“Victory comes with patience.” Patience is the key that opens the door of relief.

Keep asking Allah

Turn to Allah with dua, prayer and remembrance. The relationship you built in ease will make this natural.

Hope for relief

“Relief comes with affliction and with hardship comes ease.” No hardship lasts forever.

Teaching This Hadith to Children

This hadith was originally given to a child, which shows that children can understand and benefit from it.

Teach children to pray, make dua and thank Allah in everyday moments, not only when they want something. Share the stories of Yunus and the three men in the cave.

Help them memorise the words “Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you.” These lessons will stay with them for life.

A Daily Check of the Heart

At the end of each day, ask yourself a simple question: did I remember Allah today when nothing was wrong? Did I thank Him for my health, my food and my family?

Did I pray with presence, read a little Quran and make dua for others? If the answer is yes, you are building the relationship the hadith describes.

If not, tomorrow is a new chance. Small daily acts of remembrance in times of ease are the investment that brings Allah’s help when hardship comes.
