Ayatul Kursi: Meaning, Virtues and When to Recite

Ayatul Kursi, verse 255 of Surah Al-Baqarah, is described by the Prophet ﷺ as the greatest verse in the Quran.

It is a single verse, yet it contains a complete description of Allah’s greatness: His oneness, His life, His sustaining power, His knowledge, His authority and His majesty.

Millions of Muslims recite Ayatul Kursi every day: after prayers, before sleeping, in the morning and evening and at times of fear.

Many children learn it among their first memorised verses. Yet many people recite it without fully understanding its meaning.

This article presents the text and translation of Ayatul Kursi, explains it phrase by phrase, gathers its virtues from the Sunnah, explains when to recite it and offers practical tips for memorising it with correct Tajweed.

The Text of Ayatul Kursi

Arabic transliteration:

“Allahu la ilaha illa huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum. La ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm. Lahu ma fis-samawati wa ma fil-ard. Man dhal-ladhi yashfa’u ‘indahu illa bi-idhnih. Ya’lamu ma bayna aydihim wa ma khalfahum. Wa la yuhituna bi shay’im-min ‘ilmihi illa bima sha’. Wasi’a kursiyyuhus-samawati wal-ard. Wa la ya’uduhu hifdhuhuma. Wa huwal-‘Aliyyul-‘Azim.”

Translation:

“Allah: there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not tire Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”

Why Is It Called Ayatul Kursi?

The verse is named after the word “Kursi” mentioned in it. The Kursi is a great creation of Allah, often translated as “Footstool” or “Seat”.

Scholars explain that the Kursi is vast beyond imagination, extending over the heavens and the earth, and that the Throne (‘Arsh) is even greater.

The Kursi’s vastness points to Allah’s limitless greatness.

Phrase-by-Phrase Meaning

1. “Allahu la ilaha illa huwa”

“Allah: there is no god except Him.”

The verse begins with the foundation of Islam: tawheed, the oneness of Allah. There is nothing worthy of worship except Him.

2. “Al-Hayyul-Qayyum”

“The Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence.”

Al-Hayy means Allah’s life is perfect, without beginning or end. Al-Qayyum means He sustains Himself and everything else.

Everything in creation depends on Him, while He depends on nothing. Some scholars have described these two names as among the greatest names of Allah.

3. “La ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm”

“Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him.”

Allah never tires, dozes or sleeps. His care for creation is constant. Humans need sleep; Allah does not. This brings comfort: while we sleep, Allah watches over us.

4. “Lahu ma fis-samawati wa ma fil-ard”

“To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.”

Everything belongs to Allah: our lives, wealth, families and the whole universe. This teaches humility and trust.

5. “Man dhal-ladhi yashfa’u ‘indahu illa bi-idhnih”

“Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?”

No one can intercede with Allah without His permission. This shows His complete authority.

Even the intercession of the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of Judgement will be by Allah’s permission.

6. “Ya’lamu ma bayna aydihim wa ma khalfahum”

“He knows what is before them and what is behind them.”

Allah knows the past, present and future, everything visible and hidden.

7. “Wa la yuhituna bi shay’im-min ‘ilmihi illa bima sha'”

“And they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills.”

Human knowledge is limited. We know only what Allah allows us to know.

8. “Wasi’a kursiyyuhus-samawati wal-ard”

“His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth.”

The vastness of the Kursi shows the greatness of its Creator.

9. “Wa la ya’uduhu hifdhuhuma”

“And their preservation does not tire Him.”

Allah preserves the heavens and earth without any effort or fatigue.

10. “Wa huwal-‘Aliyyul-‘Azim”

“And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”

The verse ends with two names: Al-Aliyy, the Most High, above all creation, and Al-Azim, the Most Great, whose greatness is beyond comprehension.

Ayatul Kursi in Its Surrounding Verses

Ayatul Kursi does not stand alone. It sits in the middle of Surah Al-Baqarah, and the verses around it deepen its meaning.

The verse just before it calls believers to spend from what Allah has provided before a Day comes when there will be no trade, friendship or intercession.

Ayatul Kursi then explains why: all ownership and all authority belong to Allah alone.

The verse right after it declares that there is no compulsion in religion, because the truth has become clear from error.

Then it describes the one who rejects false gods and believes in Allah as having grasped “the most trustworthy handhold that will never break”.

After the clear description of Allah’s greatness in Ayatul Kursi, the choice between truth and falsehood becomes obvious.

The next verse describes Allah as the protecting friend of those who believe, bringing them out of darkness into light.

Read together, these verses show that Ayatul Kursi is not just a protective formula. It is a declaration of faith that should shape how we spend, how we choose and whom we rely on.
